Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has stirred political debate after making strong claims about the evolving opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that growing public dissatisfaction could challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term.

Dalung made the remarks in a video interview published by SYMFONI TV on Monday, March 23, 2026, where he argued that Nigeria’s political dynamics are shifting away from traditional party structures toward what he described as a “people versus government” movement.

According to him, the opposition in the country is no longer confined to political parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), but is increasingly being driven by ordinary citizens frustrated with governance and national challenges.

Dalung pointed to what he described as spontaneous grassroots reactions across the country, suggesting that public sentiment is becoming a more powerful force than party affiliations.

He argued that these developments reflect a broader awakening among Nigerians who are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs.

He also took aim at the administration’s handling of critical issues, particularly insecurity, stating that the government’s response has further alienated many citizens.

According to him, this growing discontent could significantly influence the political direction of the country as the next election cycle approaches.

Addressing speculations surrounding internal divisions within the ADC, Dalung dismissed claims that the party is on the verge of collapse.

He maintained that any leadership disputes would ultimately be resolved through legal processes and should not be used to undermine the party’s role as a viable opposition platform.

“There are rumors that those who are intent on destabilizing the ADC so as not to offer viable opposition next year are scheming to use the court to install or recognize the opposition,” he said.

He further alleged that certain political actors are attempting to weaken opposition parties out of fear of their potential to challenge the ruling establishment.

According to him, such moves could have serious implications for Nigeria’s democratic system if not properly addressed.

Dalung also raised concerns about alleged plans to influence institutional processes, including speculation involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). While he acknowledged that these claims remain unverified, he warned that any attempt to manipulate electoral institutions could deepen political tensions.

“Somebody who is claiming to be the authentic chairman of ADC, they want to use the court to recognize him. If ADC collapses, what is the future of democracy?” he questioned.

He added that, based on information available to him, there were rumors suggesting that efforts might be made to pressure INEC into recognizing a factional leadership within the party.

However, he emphasized that such claims remain speculative, noting that INEC typically follows due process before recognizing any party leadership.

“The rumor we got was that they want to use the INEC chairman to come out and recognize that factional chairman. However, it will still operate at the level of a rumor because the way INEC operates is that it participates in the process of transition of the ADC until it is satisfied, recognizes the leadership, and uploads their names onto its server,” Dalung stated.

He concluded by warning that attempts to suppress opposition voices could trigger a wider political crisis, stressing that the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on fairness, transparency, and respect for institutional processes.
