Urgent Need For Expansion Of Federal Medical Centers In Lagos And Abuja ~ Rt. Hon. Amos Gwamna
Rt Hon Amos Gwamna Magaji, representing the peaceful people of Zango-Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency of Kaduna State and the committee Chairman on health institutions of Nigeria in the federal house of representatives.
Mr. Speaker, I rise to address the critical need to acquire additional land to facilitate the expansion of the Federal Medical Center, Ebute Metta, in Lagos, and the Federal Medical Center, Jabi, as well as the National Hospital in Abuja.
The House notes that the Federal Medical Center in Ebute Metta originally began as a railway hospital in 1964 and was later designated as an FMC in 2004. Despite this transition, it remains situated within the Nigerian Railway Corporation compound in Ebute Metta, Lagos. Moreover, the hospital’s proximity to a bustling event center and a printing press disrupts hospital operations and inconveniences patients, underscoring the need for relocation and expansion.
Further noted is the congestion at Federal Medical Center Jabi in Abuja, which struggles to meet the growing healthcare demands of the Federal Capital Territory and its surrounding areas. It is acknowledged that a professional institute nearby was allocated a substantial parcel of land for development but has yet to utilize it. Given the pressing healthcare needs, reallocating this land to FMC Jabi would enable expanded services and improve patient care.
Additionally, the National Hospital in Abuja requires more land to construct an accident and emergency unit, with a vacant parcel conveniently located outside its current gates.
In light of the public interest, I hereby move to:
1. Urge the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the Federal Capital Territory Administration to approve and allocate these lands to the respective hospitals for the proposed expansions and initiate a compensation process for affected occupants.
2. Mandate the Committees on Land Transport, Federal Capital Territory, Legislative Compliance and Health Institutions to ensure implementation of these resolutions.
Thank you, Mr Speaker
