Ambassadorial Appointments: The Cost of Political Patronage Over Diplomacy

The Imo State ADC Coalition Support Network today expresses deep concern regarding the persistent trend of prioritizing political patronage over genuine diplomatic expertise in the appointment of Nigerian Ambassadors.

Speaking through the Coordinator of the Network, Prince Okechukwu Chimemena Okechukwu (JP), the Imo State ADC CSN highlights the frustration felt by many Nigerians who have long awaited strategic and impactful diplomatic representation abroad. “Nigerians waited for over two years of the President Tinubu-led administration to get an Ambassador, only for it to become obvious that the appointment was nothing more than political patronage. This approach is less diplomacy and more a reward system that undermines our nation’s interests on the global stage.”

Prince Okechukwu Chimemena Okechukwu (JP) further stressed the critical need for Nigeria to utilize its ambassadorships as vital tools for economic diplomacy, foreign investment attraction, and the strategic protection of Nigerian citizens and interests worldwide.

Appointments based on political reward often mean the selected individuals may lack the requisite foreign service experience, language skills, or deep understanding of the host country’s political and economic landscape.

This most times leads to a less effective diplomatic corps, which is detrimental to Nigeria’s global standing and our efforts to compete in a complex international environment.

The Imo State ADC Coalition Support Network calls on the Federal Government to:

Prioritize Meritocracy: Place a higher premium on career diplomats and individuals with proven track records in international relations, trade, and economic development.

Ensure Strategic Fit: Appoint Ambassadors whose professional expertise aligns with the specific needs and opportunities presented by the countries they are assigned to.

Invest in Foreign Service: Commit to continuous training and capacity building for Nigeria’s foreign service officers to ensure a pipeline of high-caliber professionals.

The Imo State ADC CSN believes that Nigeria deserves a diplomatic service that reflects its status as the Giant of Africa—a service that is professional, impactful, and driven by national interest, not political indebtedness.
