ADC Urges Peter Obi to Clarify Political Stance as Coalition Momentum Grows

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on Mr. Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to make a definitive decision regarding his potential participation in the ADC-led coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

This follows recent comments from Mr. Obi, in which he raised concerns about the coalition’s trajectory, specifically citing unresolved questions on zoning and the rotation of key offices. He had, however, acknowledged the stabilizing efforts of elder statesmen like former Senate President David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In response, the ADC National Spokesperson, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, provided clarity on the coalition’s current priorities. He stated that the discussion on zoning is premature, as the primary focus is on building a robust, national political structure and articulating a transformative governance agenda.

“We are not at the stage of discussing zoning. Nigerians are awaiting a clear presentation of what we will do differently. If zoning is a prerequisite for Mr. Obi’s involvement, he may need to await the appropriate phase of our dialogue,” Abdullahi stated.

He emphasized that the coalition’s immediate objective is to solidify its foundation and present itself as a credible and viable alternative to the Nigerian electorate.

“We understand Mr. Obi’s perspectives, but he needs to decide if he wishes to be part of this collective project. Our paramount mission is to convince Nigerians that we represent a credible alternative, irrespective of the eventual geographic origin of our candidate,” the Spokesperson added.

While reaffirming the coalition’s openness to Mr. Obi’s involvement and valuing his political influence, Abdullahi stressed that the overarching goal of resetting Nigeria’s political landscape remains non-negotiable.

Addressing Mr. Obi’s description of the coalition as “unstable,” Abdullahi pointed to its rapid organizational progress as evidence of its resilience and focus.

“It is regrettable to describe as unstable a coalition that has, within just five months and without holding any political office, established functional structures in 27 to 28 states. This demonstrates remarkable stability and resolve,” he stated.

The Spokesperson concluded by extending an earnest invitation to Mr. Obi to actively engage in strengthening the party, particularly in his home state of Anambra.

“We want him to be part of this journey. We want him to contribute to building this party and the coalition into the formidable force Nigeria needs.”
