NURTW passes vote of no confidence on Baruwa as Crisis Looms

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has passed a vote of no confidence on Alh. Tajudeen Baruwa, the former president of the union. This announcement was made by Alh. Tajudeen Agbede, National Chairman Caretaker Committee of the NURTW during a news conference in Abuja.

Baruwa’s tenure as the president of NURTW expired on August 28, and the union has alleged that he committed numerous wrongdoings during his time in office from August 2019 to August 2023. These alleged wrongdoings include reducing the union’s membership in the International Transport Federation (ITF) from 400,000 members to 160,000 members and failing to pay affiliation dues on time, leading to the union’s deregistration from ITF.

The NURTW also claims that Baruwa did not conduct credible Zonal Delegates Elections, thereby violating constitutional provisions for succession within the union. These actions have led to a vote of no confidence and calls for his removal from the position. It’s worth noting that Baruwa was elected for a second four-year term on August 25.
