Presidential Ambition: Atiku Abubakar’s agricultural blueprint

26th of June, 2026

Atiku Abubakar’s agricultural blueprint focuses on shifting Nigeria from subsistence farming to a commercially viable, private-sector-led agribusiness economy.

His core strategies include:

1. Modernization & Mechanization: Upgrading small-scale farming infrastructure by providing easier access to tractors, modern farm implements, and high-yield seeds.

1. Agro-Processing & Value Chain: Attracting private investments (partnering with institutions like the AfDB) to set up processing plants near farming clusters to reduce post-harvest losses.

1. Easier Financing & De-risking: Boosting farmers’ access to credit and soft loans by utilizing risk-sharing mechanisms (like NIRSAL) to lower commercial lending barriers.

1. Infrastructure Expansion: Commercializing River Basin Authorities to drastically expand irrigation systems for all-year-round farming, alongside building private sector-led commodities exchanges.

1. Land Reforms: Partnering with state governments to simplify land titling and transfers, making it easier for farmers and investors to secure land.
