The Katsina Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reassured commitment to combating transborder crimes to fortify national security.
This was disclosed in a press release issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Customs Tahir Balarabe.
The Area Controller, Comptroller Muhammed Umar, thus visited key border communities in Katsina State.
During his tour, Comptroller Umar engaged with various stakeholders, including Local Government Chairmen, business associations, and Traditional Leaders in regions such as Jibia-Magama, Jibia-Maje, Dankama, and Birnin Kuka border Stations.
He said, “The role of these border communities is pivotal in supporting the NCS and other security agencies in ensuring trade facilitation while safeguarding national security.”
Umar highlighted the Customs Command’s commitment to curbing trans-border crimes, including arms smuggling and drug trafficking orchestrated by economic saboteurs, to bolster national security and foster economic development.
He further assured that officers were adequately motivated and re-oriented to execute their duties diligently without compromise.
Acknowledging the interdependence between trade and security, Comptroller Umar assured the business community that his role in Katsina State aimed at enhancing economic activities without compromising national security. He emphasized the strategic significance of border areas for trade and overall security management.
“NCS is dedicated to fostering better community relations across the state’s 12 border communities,” the Area Controller reiterated.
In interactions with local leaders, such as Alhaji Bashir Maitan and the District Head of Kaita, Comptroller Umar urged unity among traders and residents to collaborate effectively with customs personnel for efficient border management.
He sought the support of sister agencies and highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts to tackle trans-border crimes, a sentiment shared during his interactions with representatives of various agencies.
This proactive approach by the Katsina Customs Area Command aims to ensure robust security measures while promoting legitimate trade activities in border regions.
