2027 Nigeria Decides: A Southern Presidency for Seyi Makinde – A Turning Point for Political Integrity?
By Mallam Kulu Ibn Ibrahim, National Coordinator, United Nigeria Sympathisers
As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 presidential elections, the debate surrounding zoning arrangements and the need for political integrity is intensifying. A compelling argument is emerging: the prospect of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, serving a single term as a Southern President, could usher in a new era of political maturity and solidify the principles of power rotation in our nation.
The concept of zoning, while not explicitly enshrined in the constitution, has become a cornerstone of Nigerian politics. It aims to ensure equitable representation and power sharing amongst the diverse ethnic and regional groups that constitute our nation. However, the efficacy of this arrangement has been questioned in recent years, with accusations of manipulation and disregard for the intended purpose.
The United Nigeria Sympathisers believe that Governor Makinde, known for his progressive governance and commitment to unity, embodies the kind of leadership needed to restore faith in the zoning principle. His potential single term presidency would send a powerful message: that political positioning shouldn’t supersede national interest and the established conventions of power rotation.
A Makinde presidency in 2027, limited to a single term, offers several key advantages:
Strengthened Zoning Arrangement: It would demonstrate a genuine commitment to the spirit of zoning, reinforcing the importance of regional representation and power sharing.
Restoration of Political Integrity: By voluntarily adhering to a single term, Governor Makinde would set a precedent for selfless leadership, prioritizing the stability and well-being of the nation over personal ambition.
Focus on Good Governance: Unburdened by the pressure of securing a second term, a makinde single-term president could dedicate all his energy and resources to addressing pressing national issues, such as economic development, insecurity, and infrastructure improvement.
Reduced Political Tension: A Makinde single-term presidency would alleviate anxieties surrounding regional dominance and promote a more inclusive and collaborative political environment.
Of course, the decision ultimately rests with the Nigerian electorate. However, we believe that Governor Makinde presents a unique opportunity to not only provide capable leadership but also to fundamentally reshape the narrative surrounding political integrity and adherence to established norms.
The 2027 elections offer a chance to redefine Nigerian politics. Electing Governor Seyi Makinde as a Southern President for a single term could be the bold step needed to usher in a new era of stronger democratic values, greater political stability, and a more united Nigeria. Let us consider this opportunity with open minds and a commitment to the long-term benefit of our nation.
