Umahi Makes Surprise Move On Lagos–Calabar Highway As Flooding Threat Sparks Urgent Action

The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, CON, has led an inspection of Section 4 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway in Ondo State, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to ensure the timely delivery of the major infrastructure project.

Umahi was joined by members of the National Assembly Committee on Works and the Presidential Community Engagement Team during the inspection.

The engagement team included Hon. Moremi Ojudu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South West); Dr. Abiodun Essiet (North Central); Hon. Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai (North West); Hon. Chioma Nweze (South East); and Hon. Dr. Gift Johnbull (South-South).

The inspection provided an opportunity for stakeholders to assess progress on the coastal highway and address issues that could affect its smooth construction and long-term functionality.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to completing the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, describing the project as a transformative infrastructure initiative expected to improve connectivity, stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities and advance the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The team also inspected sections of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway affected by flooding, with attention focused on drainage and other measures required to improve the movement of stormwater.

From the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, the team proceeded to Lagos, where discussions were held on areas where service lanes would be provided along the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.

The proposed service lanes are expected to help motorists navigate the highway more efficiently and maintain access to adjoining areas as construction progresses.

Drainage channels along the affected corridors were also inspected, while additional locations were earmarked for new drainage infrastructure to ensure seamless water movement and reduce the risk of flooding.

The latest inspection underscores the Federal Government’s push to address both construction and traffic-management concerns as work progresses on the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.

With attention now turning to service lanes, drainage infrastructure and flood-prone areas, stakeholders say the measures are critical to ensuring that the massive coastal highway delivers its intended economic and transportation benefits.
