Former President Obasanjo Speaks Out on Oyo Monarchs’ Alleged Disrespect for Governor Makinde
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has recently addressed concerns regarding reported tensions between some Oyo State monarchs and Governor Seyi Makinde. Speaking at a press conference in Abeokuta, Obasanjo shed light on his previous remarks on the matter.
Obasanjo clarified that his previous comments, in which he criticized certain Oyo monarchs, were rooted in the belief that respect for constituted authority is vital for the progress and stability of any state. He expressed concern that some traditional rulers were not showing the expected level of respect towards Governor Makinde’s office.
The former president emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony between traditional institutions and elected leaders. He stated, “While traditional rulers are custodians of our culture and heritage, it’s essential that they work collaboratively with elected officials for the betterment of their communities.”
Obasanjo’s remarks come in the wake of public discussions about alleged friction between certain Oyo monarchs and the state government. The former president’s intervention aims to encourage dialogue and foster a more cohesive working relationship between the state’s traditional and political leadership.
Governor Makinde’s administration has previously expressed its commitment to maintaining a harmonious working relationship with all stakeholders, including traditional rulers. The governor’s office has not yet issued a formal response to Obasanjo’s recent comments.
As discussions continue around this matter, it remains to be seen how Obasanjo’s remarks will impact the dynamics between Oyo State’s traditional rulers and its elected officials.
