Armed Forces Neutralise Terrorist Attack on Kogi School; Abducted Students Rescued, Vice Principal, Two Residents Killed

The Kogi State Government has confirmed a terrorist attack on Iluke Community in the Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, revealing that security operatives successfully foiled an attempt to abduct students writing the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the government described the incident as tragic but praised the swift response of security forces, local vigilantes, and hunters for preventing what could have been a major abduction.

According to Fanwo, the attackers stormed the community disguised in military uniforms and disrupted an ongoing WAEC examination, attempting to force students into the bush.

The commissioner disclosed that three residents lost their lives during the attack, including the Vice Principal of Government Secondary School, Iluke, Mr. Gani Anifowose.

He explained that security personnel quickly mobilised to confront the attackers, leading to a fierce gun battle in which all the abducted students were rescued unharmed.

“The swift intervention of the military, supported by local vigilantes and hunters, ensured that all the students were rescued safely and reunited with their families,” the statement noted.

Fanwo further revealed that one of the terrorists was neutralised during the exchange of gunfire, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.

He added that security agencies have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are intensifying operations to ensure they are apprehended and brought to justice.

The Kogi State Government expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the attack and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security across the state.

The incident has once again highlighted security challenges facing some rural communities, even as authorities insist that efforts are being intensified to protect residents and educational institutions from criminal attacks.
