Nigerians groan over persistent increase in cost of feeding

As Nigeria commemorates World Food Day, many of its citizens are expressing concerns about the high cost of food and calling on the government to support farmers to boost food production and achieve food sufficiency.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day is “Water is Life, Water Is Food: Leave No One Behind.” While water is vital for food production, many Nigerians believe that the country’s climate conditions are suitable for agricultural production but that government initiatives to support farmers have not been adequately executed.

Farmers face challenges such as inadequate resources, weed and insect infestations, and lack of access to loans. Government officials have been providing forms for loans to farmers, but the results have often been disappointing. Many believe that more support for farmers, rural infrastructure, and training for youths in agriculture is essential to achieving food sufficiency.

Agricultural research, development of agricultural value chains, rural infrastructure improvement, and youth training in agriculture are seen as key steps to realizing food sufficiency in Nigeria. However, it is essential for these efforts to be implemented effectively to make a meaningful impact on the country’s food security.

World Food Day serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing hunger and taking action for a sustainable future in terms of food, people, and the planet.
