FG Probes UN, Others Over Utilisation of $100m Women Fund

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has expressed concern over the $100 million women’s fund provided by the United Nations for women’s development. She has given a one-month ultimatum to the United Nations and international agencies to explain how the fund was spent.

Kennedy-Ohanenye questioned the utilization of the fund, particularly the fact that the highest amount given to beneficiaries was between N30,000 to N60,000. She has demanded a detailed account of how the funds allocated for agriculture among women were spent, and she has threatened legal action if a justifiable reason is not provided.

The ultimatum runs from October 16 to November 15, during which the organizations are expected to provide the requested reports. If they fail to do so, the Ministry will proceed with court action in the interest of Nigerian women.

Kennedy-Ohanenye has emphasized the need for transparency in the use of funds sourced from donors in the name of Nigeria and has vowed to hold the organizations accountable for their expenditures. She stated that Nigerian women and children, who make up over 70% of the population, deserve a clear account of how the funds were used, especially when significant amounts were allocated for activities that may not directly benefit the intended recipients.
