Expect Quality healthcare services in FCT – Wike promises Abuja resident
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to enhance the quality of health services in Abuja, the federal capital. He made this commitment during a meeting with the executive members of the FCT Chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors.
Wike acknowledged the current inadequacies in the health services in the FCT and assured that provisions in the 2024 budget would be made to improve the quality of services in health facilities. He expressed disappointment that the capital city did not have the quality of health facilities he expected, but he pledged to elevate the health system to meet the highest standards.
The Minister also mentioned that efforts were underway to complete the Utako Hospital and that the FCT Administration was committed to meeting the health needs of the people.
Regarding salary increments and allowances for medical personnel, Wike explained that the FCT currently lacks the financial resources to support such increases, as the wage bill already stands at N8 billion monthly. He encouraged the doctors to prioritize unpaid increments and allowances while focusing on enhancing facilities for quality healthcare services.
Dr. Rahman Olayinka, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors, thanked the Minister for addressing some of their challenges quickly. He highlighted the shortage of manpower in FCT health facilities and requested that the health sector be considered during recruitment opportunities. He also called for the supply of more drugs to meet the needs of residents and those accessing healthcare facilities from neighboring states. Additionally, he mentioned the outstanding hazard allowance owed to healthcare workers.
