Federal Government suspends implementation of eight varsities approved by Buhari
President Bola Tinubu has approved a plan to implement only six out of the 14 federal tertiary institutions established during the previous administration. The decision to keep eight institutions in abeyance is due to concerns over the cost and specific requirements of these institutions. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, made this announcement after a meeting with the President.
The government plans to stagger the implementation of these institutions, focusing on six in the fields of agriculture, education, and medicine. These new universities and institutions were established to address gaps in the healthcare sector and promote research and pharmaceutical production.
The take-off grant for these universities and institutions had been approved during the previous administration. The Minister emphasized the need for prudent financial management, as these tertiary institutions are capital-intensive and require substantial funding for infrastructure, staff recruitment, and other needs.
President Tinubu has also given the green light to complete the National Library Complex in Abuja, recognizing its importance as an educational institution for the nation. The project will be reviewed to determine what remains to be done and the associated costs. The government’s focus is on institutions that provide skills to empower graduates to become self-reliant.
