Illegal Detention: PDP Youth Group Demands Release of SHAFI’U TURETA
The PDP Youth Group Red Cap Movement has condemned the continued detention of Shafi’u Tureta, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was arrested and imprisoned for criticizing the Sokoto State Governor and the First Lady.
Shafi’u’s alleged crime was sharing a video of the First Lady dancing amidst a spree of dollars on her birthday, and questioning the governor’s decision to spend N1.2 billion on repairing 25 boreholes. However, according to his brother, Shafi’u did not release the video; he obtained it from a friend of the First Lady who posted it on her WhatsApp status.
The PDP Youth Group asserts that Shafi’u’s detention is a clear violation of his constitutional right to freedom of expression, guaranteed under Section 39 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
“We are practicing democracy in Nigeria, not dictatorship,” the group stated. “The Sokoto State Governor should focus on delivering his campaign promises instead of targeting opposition members, which will only lead to unpopularity.”
The group demands the unconditional release of Shafi’u Tureta, calling for a fair hearing and an end to the harassment of opposition voices.
“We will not stand idly by while our members are intimidated and silenced,” the PDP Youth Group declared. “We urge the Sokoto State Government to respect the fundamental rights of citizens and uphold the principles of democracy.” Said Daure David Spokesman of the Group
